In what could be a very positive moment, or disaster, for her campaign, Hillary Clinton went on Meet the Press this morning for a full hour with a key portion of it dealing with the current fracas over comments that may have offended some African-Americans. At the outset she charged that the Obama forces were “deliberately distorting” remarks, adding, “This is, you know, a, a — an unfortunate story line that the Obama campaign has pushed very successfully.... They’ve been making this — they’ve been telling people, in a very selective way, what the facts are.”
Politico.com reveals that Obama's campaign, while Clinton was still taping the show, "was e-mailing debate-style rebuttals, including one headlined, 'Obama Consistently Opposed the Iraq War.' In a conference call soon after Clinton’s appearance, Obama struck back in sharp terms at Clinton’s criticism: 'What we saw this morning is why the American people are tired of Washington politicians and the games they play. I have to say that she started this campaign saying that she wanted to make history and lately she has been spending a lot of time rewriting it.'"

I think the last comment the most important, especially since I forgot to turn it on. Digital television has come early to NYC and the signals in the air still fade in and out sometimes, one of the "side effects" of 9/11 (must be confusing to the Brits everything there is usually 11/9, the last 11 hour of the 11 day of the 11th month had impeachable Cheney at the Tomb of the Unknown and President Bush in Waco, Texas) and the loss of the hugh TV transmitter. One was proposed for Governors Island. Sorry...
She stated that she voted for the Iraq invasion because the White House said they would then put in all the inspectors from the UN and allow them to continue their work. In technical terms she voted for the US to attain "belligerent" status (as Iraq was once when it invaded Kuwait) because she thought the work of the internationally sponsored investigation would have continued.
Hillary is consistently losing the battle of the sound bites--the Obama campaign has some serious snap. Not that that should decide who's a better presidential candidate but his campaign beats her on the one-liners. Except for that churlish "likeable enough" comment.
I thought Obama's "likable enough" comment was snarky, yes; but entirely understandable. Hillary's original response to the question about her likability ("that hurts my feelings") appeared so contrived (to me) - another example of how she calculates and manipulates to score points. I find it so irritating -- and I can't believe veterans like Frank Rich are fooled! Sure, Obama could have responded with more graciousness and scored points by being more of a gentleman, but that's a pretty high road... At least he isn't a fake. And I don't take Obama's reaction to be sexist, either. My guess is he was just plain disgusted with her hypocrisy -- how she can turn off the "robo-feministe" to put on the "poor little me" routine when she needs to evoke some sympathy. As a woman, I find that very offensive.
