5 years ago today: Bush's fateful pre-war press conference

You remember it: Five years ago tonight, and 13 days before the invasion. Most reporters punted as the president made jokes and read off the names of the reporters/questioners in order from a slip of paper after proclaiming that god was on our side. I recall all this (taken largely from my new book) today, with a list of questions that should have been asked, over at E&P:

Bush, Cheney and the binladens launch a $3,000,000,000,000 oil war and America... yawns.

Nice work with the blog.

So far, we have 2 people who care.

You.

Me.

Greg,

Thanks for confirming what a bunch of us always knew; you've been against Bush from the beginning, and you are nowhere near the unbiased media that you should be.

If your take on the run up to the war on Iraq was that the media was kind to Bush... then you were reading different articles then I was.

Good morning Greg,

We in the military knew things were perculating long before 9-11 within the Islamic movement, and I believe you in the media were aware. Stating that-your obligations did not begin or end on this Wednesday in March 2003. In fact, your questions were about 10 years late. Once a movment or a nation attempts to take the life of a former president of the USA, we are obligated to move-not negotiate, act. The reason is the past 15 years. Your newsconference questions should have contained, "Why did we wait so long to remove Hussein? He attempted to kill President Bush 41-isnt that an act of war? He provided money and support to the Palestinian terrorist organizations suicide bombers-isnt that a violation of the cease fire of the Gulf War? Osama Bin Laden declared war on the west in 1997, 1998, and 2000-why did we wait so long to act decisively? Why did 3000 souls perish when we were aware of this threat?" and so on, Greg-those are more important questions.

Take care,
