U.S. Abortion Data Proves Revealing

The Guardian DataBlog has performed a real service pulling together the latest numbers on the number of abortions state-by-state in the USA, which both confirm certain things you might expect (they happen more often in blue states) but also prove surprising (the large number of red states where the procedure is popular). The chart reveals the rather high overall number nationally that may shock some -- 233 abortions per 1,000 live births. These states have numbers just under the national average, but not by much: Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Maine, Montana, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas. Right at or above the norm: Georgia, Kansas, Nevada, N. Carolina, Virginia.

The Guardian also has story today on "the religious right" mounting new assault on abortion rights in U.S. And below: a report today on new law in Baltimore which makes so-called "pro-life" counseling centers display signs informing visitors that they do NOT provide info on birth control or referrals for abortions.
