44 Years Ago: My 'Baptism By Fire' at Chicago Democratic Convention

In 1968, in the armed camp that was Mayor Daley's Chicago,  I would end up spending part  of the time in the headquarters of Sen. Eugene McCarthy and his antiwar forces at the Hilton--and in the streets directly below during the now-infamous protests and "police riot."  I did not get mashed, but  some of the bloodied were taken to the McCarthy offices--or to the hospital.  Violence also famously broke out in the convention hall.   New photo essay today at that great NYT "Lens" blog.  I write about my own experience here.
