In 1968, in the armed camp that was Mayor Daley's Chicago, I would end up spending part of the time in the headquarters of Sen. Eugene McCarthy and his antiwar forces at the Hilton--and in the streets directly below during the now-infamous protests and "police riot." I did not get mashed, but some of the bloodied were taken to the McCarthy offices--or to the hospital. Violence also famously broke out in the convention hall.
