John Steinback's Family Upset About Texas Execution
We covered last night the sickening execution by the state of Texan of an inmate with an IQ of about 61. Now it turns out--in this amazing story-- that the key decision cited by judges in refusing his repeal had cited a passage in John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" in support. This ticked off the Steinbeck family, including his son, who have protested the ruling and the execution. And it seems Steinbeck himself said the character in his book, who did kill a man, was judged insane and imprisoned, not killed by the state.
