Forget 'The 1812 Overture'

If you need spirited orchestral music for the 4th, try Ludwig, also one of greatest pieces ever.

NPR is addressing the issue of the "Greatest American Symphony". If a vote were taken among critics, it might be Aaron Copland's Symphony #3. I have a special fondness for William Schuman's Symphony #3 (not to be confused with the German-born composer Robert Schumann whose Symphony #3 has a place name: "Rhenish". A piece that's NOT a symphony "America, An Epic Rhapsody" by naturalized American Ernest Bloch has from time to time been played during a 4th of July outdoor concert that I've seen on TV. If they tried playing just the final movement of Charles Ives's fourth Symphony there might be a riot takin to the "Rite of Spring" premier!
