Today (Sunday, January 26th) is Mozart's Birthday Eve (he was born January 27, 1756). At the end of his career, Beethoven set about to compose a set of variations for piano called the "Diabelli Variations" somewhat similar to J.S. Bach's "Goldberg Variations". As a little jokem, Beethoven compose THIRTY-THREE variations seemingly to one-up Bach's set of 32, but that 33rd variation is not heaven-storming but gentle and humorous. Along the way, Beethoven wanted to pay homage to Mozart as well, so he transmogrified an aria from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" into a variation that fit into the piece.
