Sure, I'm sorry Harold Ramis died and all that but I had to laugh over the claims that he was some kind of genius and avatar--just look at the quality of his work beyond, maybe, three films. Also overblown were claims of the "liberal" or even "left" sensibility of most of his work. Now the estimable Thomas Frank
takes that on at Salon. Frank's claims are also overblown (a few of them, one hopes, are tongue-in-check) but some do hit home. Yes, "Caddyshack" and other were favorites of the P.J. O'Rourke crowd.

He wrote and/or directed "Caddyshack," "Stripes," "Groundhog Day," "Animal House," "National Lampoon's Vacation," "Ghostbusters," "The Ice Harvest," and "Analyze This," in addition to his early work on "SCTV." No one is claiming he was Ingmar Bergman, but he unquestionably was a successful filmmaker who made liberals, conservatives, and moderates laugh.
