Not a complete shock, but still news that Oliver Stone has signed to helm big budget Edward Snowden pic, starting at end of year. Stone long ago declared Snowden a "hero" but film is based on recent book by Guardian reporter Luke Harding, which is somewhat more divided on that. (Guardian editor Rusbridger says he's looking forward to "working with" Stone.) Stone says, "This is one of the greatest stories of our time." But Stone film will compete with a rival project based on Glenn Greenwald's book.
I was there, with two books on Wikileaks, Assange and Manning, early on and recall feeding frenzy, requests for options, and rival films, most of which never got off the ground. Lack of success for the main Assange movie--despite Benedict Cumberbatch--may discourage studios as time rolls on. Whether that's a good or bad thing, given the past, always up for debate...
