As I know all too well, authors of books (I have written nine of them) are notoriously touchy about "unfair" reviews. So imagine how David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer winner for The New York Times, felt when he learned that he was going to get a pan this coming Sunday -- in his own paper. At E&P, Joe Strupp offers an exclusive on Johnson's protest letter to the Times:

Chait's review of Johnston echos critics of Chomsky. It is not clear that Chait has actually read, or understood the subject of his review. He seems to be critiquing a total distortion of Johnston's positions. I see this quite frequently coming from pathological ideologues whose delusional framework allows zero recognition of easily ascertainable facts. They either must ignore reality, or experience facts as a personal attack.
As a book reviewer (www.writingdoctor.typepad.com), I found Chait's review of Johnston's FREE LUNCH a deliberate distortion of the book and what it had to offer the reader. Surely, FREE LUNCH is neither "Naderite" nor "left-wing populist" as Chait maintains but is a clear picture of the greedy dog-eat-dog manipulations eroding our society today. Johnston sees clearly as he depicts the behind-the-scene machinations of the powerful. FREE LUNCH should be required reading for all of us before we enter the voting booth.
