David Brooks in New York Times offers friendly advice to John McCain on how to "transition" to frontrunner and beat Obama in the fall. McCain's problem is that he used to be "the happy warrior" but now that is Obama. Why no longer so happy? What does he have to overcome? Dig this Brooks explanation:
"McCain seems to be burdened by the emotional cost of the war in Iraq, by the gravity of young people dying. But F.D.R. was a happy wartime campaigner and to compete with the Democrats in the fall, McCain will have to reconnect with the spirit of this moment. The country, the über-pollster Peter Hart notes, is not in a mood for irritation and anger. It’s thirsty for uplift, progress and hope."
McCain is so emotionally "burdened" by kids dying that he wants us to fight on to "victory" -- and stay there for 100 years if need be.
