Forty years ago this week I attended what was then the greatest rock concert I'd seen -- The Band in Buffalo. I'd seen them, sort of, almost exactly four years before that, backing up Dylan as The Hawks. They were at their speak, with the great second album, "The Weight" in Easy Rider, and just then becoming the first American group to make the cover of Time. Here's some rare footage of them at that time, doing "Cripple Creek." Of course, Rick is now dead and Richard a suicide, but Robbie still Robbie and Levon still up in Woodstock doing his Midnight Ramble shows which I swear I will make some day.
