Back in November 1969 the release of The Band's 2nd self-titled album earned them the cover of TIME magazine, which hailed the new American Roots Music after a few years of psychedelia and Brit stuff. That month, still in college, I caught them in Buffalo for the first time -- or really the second time, counting the Dylan/Hawks tour in 1965. Here is rare footage of them performing in a Woodstock studio (not Big Pink) in 1969:
