Hmmm...you let Mozart's Birthday pass without comment a few days ago. J. S. Bach and Mozart are the great streams flowing into the Beethoven River and it would seem that attention must be paid (an original phrase I just made up)to these inestimable gentlemen by any LvB enthusiast. Schubert's premature demise is as tragic as Mozart's because in 1828, he was really prepared to pick up the mantle of the recently deceased Beethoven: two superb string quartets, 14 & 15; a Quintet for strings (not to be confused with the Quintet for piano and string quartet) and magisterial piano sonatas at the end of his life. Beethoven dipped into writing songs with his Opus 90 "An Die Ferne Geliebte", but Schubert retired the trophy in that genre.
