Janet Maslin of the NYT tomorrow reviews new book by Chuck Thompson with this title: "Better Off Without 'Em." He means, after touring the region: Let the South form its own imperfect union. The title turned off cooperaton form the likes of James Carville and Michael Lind, but undeterred, Thompson proceeded. So: "Off he went, roaming Southern states looking to shoot fish in barrels. Indeed, a measure of this book’s malevolence is the haste with which its author hustles his way to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky. (where he watched a little girl staring at a dinosaur 'in silent, imbecilic awe'), to the Redneck Shop in Laurens, S.C., where he could buy a Ku Klux Klan outfit and walk out into the quaint town square 'dressed to lynch.'”
He even writes the inaugural speech for the first president of the new country, in 1917--current Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia.

4329 Lidheyhadause 21Sounds like a must-read for those who have also read Charlie Pierce's "Idiot America". CPP seems to be VERY BUSY these days, and he may not have the time to publish a sequel to "IA"; just an anthology of his writings at Esquire.com peut-etre.
