Lawrence Downes at NYT with piece today hailing Woody Guthrie at 100th birthday and asking where the hardcore political troubadours have gone. Seeger too old, Dylan not into it, Springsteen too safe, and so on. Is it true, as he says, that son Arlo endorsed Ron Paul this year? Downes wants more real troublemakers--I guess the word today would be "hooligans," after the Pussy Riot case--but does not mention Steve Earle, who even broke classic song pleading, "Come back Woody Guthrie / to us all." Not to mention: "The Revolution Starts Now."
