Leave it to Leonard Cohen, virtually the only major "rock" artist who has mentioned Hiroshima (which I've been marking in pieces in this memorial month) in song. In his "The Future," he sang, as a modern villain, "Give me Christ / Or give me Hiroshima." Before warning: "Get ready for the future: it is murder." Of course, his narrator had opened the song with what I thought was a very Cheneyesque musing, Give me back my broken night /my mirrored room, my secret life / it's lonely here, /there's no one left to torture."
