Shocking as it seems (at least to me), Chuck Berry--forget Elvis, Chuck was "Mr. Rock 'n Roll"--turns 86 this week. Here's a clip of him doing "Johnny B. Goode" with Springsteen and band back in 1995. When I first met Bruce in '72, one of the first stories he told me was about early E Streeters backing up Chuck as complete unknowns, and Chuck's time-honored practice of using local musicians for all gigs (to save money), driving up to venue alone in Caddy, with just his gee-tar, and demanding pay in cash before going on. Also, forgetting what song he was playing during guitar breaks.
