Great to see "Beasts of the Southern Wild" get four major nods, including shocker (but deserved) for Best Director. Glad to see Tarantino and Bigelow skipped there--protests obviously had some effect. But Mark Boal got "original screenplay" nod for "Zero Dark Thirty," although should be in adapted screenplay category--adapted from CIA briefings.
Pleased that "Searching for Sugarman" got one for best doc, along with other very fine ones I've seen "The Invisible War" and "Surviving a Plague," plus "5 Cameras" and "The Gatekeepers." Suddenly "Silver Linings" looks like major contender for Best Picture, which I can't see--okay flick but nothing more (although in Hollywood these days, one of best, I guess). "Argo" much better. Otherwise slim pickings indeed. "The Master" was weak but Phoenix rose, fine.
Sorry to see "Beasts" did not get original music nod. What they skipped:
