I followed this story earlier today (even the murders that started it last weekend) without knowing the full details. The former cop, Dorner, just shot three policemen today in Riverside (one fatally), is on the run, and promising "asymetrical warfare" vs. more of those in uniform. Oh, by the way, he is a trained sniper and claims he owns a surface-to-air missile launcher. Not sure of his grudge but he is charging mass corruption in LAPD, for one thing. He posted a "manifesto" on Facebook (see below). That's amazing photo of him at left with former famed police chief Benjamin Bratton.
UPDATE #3 Press conference at 10 a.m. (West Coast time) added little but stressed serious nature of this, and fact he has assault rifles. Reporters seem to think police action outside hotel in San Diego related to Dorner holed up there.
UPDATE #2: Here is his full, lengthy, manifesto. "No one grows up and wants to be a cop killer."...."I am here to change and make policy. The culture of LAPD versus the
community and honest/good officers needs to and will change. I am here
to correct and calibrate your morale compasses to true north." ... "Citizens/non-combatants, do not render medical aid to downed officers/enemy combatants. They would not do the same for you."...."You are aware that I have always been the top shot, highest score, an
expert in rifle qualifications in every unit I’ve been in. I will
utilize every bit of small arms training, demolition, ordnance, and
survival training I've been given." ..."I am a walking exigent circumstance with no OFF or reset button."
Also: Claims he got two concussions from playing football and suffered from depression since. Wants his brain studied by science. And: shout-outs to Mia Farrow and Sen. Dianne Feinstein for backing gun control. "In my cache you will find several small arms. In the cache, Bushmaster
firearms, Remington precision rifles, and AAC Suppressors (silencers).
All of these small arms are manufactured by Cerberus/Freedom Group. The
same company responsible for the Portland mall shooting, Webster, NY,
and Sandy Hook massacre." Also praise for Joe Scarborough, who he claims to have met in 2002 and chatted with.
Plus: "It’s kind of sad I won't be around to view and enjoy The Hangover III.
What an awesome trilogy. Todd Phillips, don't make anymore Hangovers
after the third, takes away the originality of its foundation. World War
Z looks good and The Walking Dead season 3 (second half) looked
intriguing. Damn, gonna miss shark week." More shout-outs to everyone from Anderson Cooper to Charlie Sheen. "Anthony Bourdain, you're a modern renaissance man who epitomizes the saying 'too cool for school.'"
UPDATE #1: Well, I warned this would get nuts. Already this morning there have been TWO shootings after
police pulled over vehicles in Torrance they thought carried Dorner.
Two of seriously wounded taken to hospitals. They were delivering newspapers. Also: A man believed to be
Dorner tied up a man last night in San Diego and attempted to steal a boat and maybe flee to Mexico.
