Terrific, at times witty, piece by Jeremy Denk (who I interviewed for my Beethoven book) in this week's New Yorker on a couple of his key piano teachers as youth and then in college. Video now posted. His early teacher's drawings in his notebook best part of story and vid.

The "New Yorker" denies access to the story beyond the first paragraph or two. The title of the piece : "Every good boy does fine" refers to the mnemonic for the lines of the treble staff...E-natural; G-natural; B-natural; D-natural and F-natural. The mnemonic for the bass clef is "great big dogs from Africa". I don't know who made these up.
