Klein Nachtmusik?

As some of you may know, a controversy surrounding a Joe Klein column in TIME last week has been swirling all week. It's far too complex to detail here but it involves Klein blasting the Democrats for their FISA bill, but he got it all wrong -- then compounded the errors by issuing several completely inadequate "corrections." Today I was first to report on the (qualified) "correction" that TIME put in print to appear in its next issue, appearing Friday.

For the background, go to http://www.editorandpublisher.com, or find the extremely dogged Glenn Greenwald's blog at http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/index.html. Then comment here.

"Well beyond stupid." That sums up Joe Klein perfectly. Hack.

Re Klein's correction

I took the liberty of editing it for truthfulness. The result is below:

Correction: I was wrong to write last week that the House Democratic version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) would require a court approval of individual foreign surveillance targets. The bill does not even approach saying that. A certain dishonest Republican believe(s) it can be interpreted that way, but sane people don't. To read about the disputed section of the bill, go to The Huffington Post to read what the bill's author has to say.

Bloggers should stop pestering Joe Klein and learn the 20 basic Rules of Journalism.

ok, so we have a small victory here of holding a terrible writer somewhat accountable. but Greg, where were the editors on this? how many pieces like this get out that there are not enough people or time to fact check and force a correction? how much garbage to mainstream papers and shows put out everyday that simply lies to and misleads people?

I have never trusted Joe Klein as a journalist. He is just a little too shady for me!

Joe Klein did the damage he intended. This article including the oops "I was wrong" is thinly veiled effort to sabotage Democrats. Corrections never get the prominent positioning the original "wrong" article and therefore the "I was wrong" message never will reach the full circulation maganitude and impact of the damaging piece.

Am I the only one who noticed Klein joined bottom dweller Coulter in her quest for a one party system in this country a long time ago.

I was discussing the Klein Affair with a friend yesterday who asked "Since when do publications such as Time and the Chicago Tribune take responsibility for what is written by their columnists?"

He has a point. Does Time magazine factcheck Krauthammer and Kristol? Columnists generally have wide latitude in this regard.

This is not a defense of Klein and his lazy reportage. It's simply a question of protocol. Can anyone shed more light on this?

Joe Klein is a liar. Joe Klein had the audacity to attack a man who had fingered him as anonymous, author of primary colors, rather than admitting the man was right.

Joe Klein is now in the category of political hack and water carrier. Move over Bob Novak.

I don't understand what motivates Joe's constant wanking. Perhaps if he'd take up actual journalism and report the facts, (which were clear in the launguage of the bill)he could avoid all the richly deserved critism. I also think Time Magazine handled the matter very poorly

Time and Joe Klein have both demonstrated clear political bias. Obviously, we would not have gotten their foggy admissions without a lot of pressure.

Klein and Time have a lot of rethinking to do.

Will they?

The political mendacity of the Republicans and their supporters in the MSM must continue to be opposed.

Hurrah for Glenn Greenwald!
